Fair Trade Manitoba (FTM) began, in 2006, as a coming together of representatives of a number of sectors within the province: non-governmental international development organizations, schools, churches, unions and individual citizens/families wishing to encourage a greater awareness of fair trade issues and products. It is this volunteer group that undertook the initial efforts to create a web site and shopping guide, promote fair trade consumerism and procurement, and to hold a “Fair Trade Challenge” campaign.
After a year of development, with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency supporting this work, Fair Trade Manitoba became a program of the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC). Since that time, MCIC, in cooperation with a broad range of stakeholders, has established a strong fair trade presence in Manitoba.
