Winnipeggers lead the way! While there are national events being held in Ottawa during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, Winnipeg is hosting 8 local events, drawing attention to the continuing need to take action against gender based violence.

The campaign started in 1991, choosing the dates November 25 – International Day Against Violence Against Women – and December 10- International Human Rights Day – in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. Since 1991, 5,179 organizations in approximately 187 countries have participated in the 16 Days Campaign.

“Violence against women is perhaps the most shameful human rights violation. And it is perhaps the most pervasive. It knows no boundaries of geography, culture or wealth. As long as it continues, we cannot claim to be making real progress towards equality, development, and peace.”
– Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations.
